Last night was our Glow in the Dark Volleyball Tournament at FGCU's beach front. Chaefin also played beach rock for those not participating in the games. My group and I worked in association with American Cancer Society, raising almost $600 that goes to cancer research and awareness. We would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us, and the fight for cancer. We had such a great turn out. We hope you all had fun!

I've never met anyone who could play the guitar as well as this 12 year old boy does. I'm amazed at how fast and how well he can play hard pieces such as "Come Together" and "Hotel California". My family and I all went up to Virginia to visit my Memère and Pepère (my grandparents) this following weekend. We have known for awhile of my Grandma's heart problems, but it has just recently become a bigger problem. Glad to say she is doing much better, and as always, it was a pleasure to see them. It has come time for Ashlie to be in front of my camera. It was such a pleasure to work with her, she is such a natural. I took her to one of my favorite spots, and found a field full of old rusty tractors. Photographers Paradise. Being the cautionary person I am, we scoped it out for a few minutes to make sure it was safe and no one sketchy was around. In fact, nobody was around. We were able to take a few pictures before paradise instantly became a ghost town. The only semi truck that was there in this field full of tractors started its engine. Ashlie and I locked frightened eyes.

"RUN!"

As were hurriedly ran to my locked car, I fumbled for my keys and my camera stuff.

"Oh my God, oh my God..."

We jumped into my car and I through the car into reverse. You would've thought I was a pro driver! We pass by the semi and still see no one around, even though the air was filled with black, lung-coughing air. Needless to say, we were shaking as though we have had 10 espressos each. We drove right out of there looking back at every detail and always remembering that no one was there.

In case you are wondering, we did finish taking photos. We even went back the next day to find the semi untouched and unmoved. Here are the pictures we took, including a picture of the semi via camera phone.

I must say I have completely fallen in love with Chicago, and for all I know it feels the same way. Chicago is full of the type of energy that makes you want seek and learn; to live your life in the most ambitious of ways. Big city livin' is what many call it, and in many ways it is. But I never once felt overpowered in any way by the tall buildings, only appreciative of the artistry that took place. Chicago is a place for innovation, art, and culture. To capture it in a photograph is almost minimal to what its like in reality, but I hope my photographs can show you a glimpse and help you feel how I experienced this wonderful city.

So, I finally finished my most recently read book by Chuck Palahniuk, Diary. Time is almost hard to find these days and traveling to Chicago definitely allotted for some good ol' Chuck reading. I must say he always has a way capturing me from introduction all the way to the end. It was a comical horror, with an inconvenient twist. Definitely a must read for the artistic mind!

Camera in my Stomach

For the past week now, I have been getting extreme pains in my stomach which lead to nausea and restlessness when I sleep. Because I am cautious about everything I start thinking the worse, "Is it an ulcer?". Looking up everything I could on the internet, I begin to think that my symptoms could be contributed to an ulcer.

Great, just my luck right?

I made it to the doctors the next day, thankfully they could get me in (thanks mommy), and he began to tell me that what I am experiencing is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, better known as Acid reflux.

Geez, this is going to be a bad day.

He began to tell me that over 20 million Americans have it, and its quite normal. It causes extreme heartburn, and the stomach pains that I am experiencing. But just to make sure, he wants to do a procedure called Endoscopy. Endoscopy means 'looking inside', which meant I was going to get a big tube down my throat into my stomach which allows for inspection, and picture taking!

OUCH. Very cool, but ouch.

So I set up my appointment for today, and my mom took me to the doctors for my 11 o' clock appointment. My mom and I ended up waiting in the waiting room for about 2 hours before I was called in.

This time is making me so nervous, am I gonna end up like that guy in the movie Awake?

I'm freaking out at this point until I hear my name being called in to the back.

"Can my mom come with me?"

"Unfortunately sweetheart, she can't."

WHAT!!

At this point my heart rate went straight through the roof, I can't do this by myself! She directed me to the bathroom where I put on my funny backless gown and I headed to the bed, where I found my mom.

"Oh thank goodness, they let you in."

While the nurse is prepping me I began to get a bit nervous. As I look to my right this man with a bristly beard and tattooed arm comes through the swinging doors and walks toward me.

"Well who do we have here? I'm gonna be takin' care of ya!"

I hope this guy knows what he is doing.

He starts looking for veins in my arm so he could start up my IV. Before I knew it, he already puntured my skin and I was set to go.

No we're rollin'. Litterally.

"I love you."

"I love you too mom."

I'm greeted with a smile and a hello as I enter a room that reminded me of a dentist's office, but with extremely big lights. I'm calm for a minute as I listen to classic rock they have playing on their itunes in the room. Mister Britsly Beard told a few jokes, but how much can you really laugh when you got stuff coming out of your arms.

Haha.

The Doctor comes in and asks how I am doing.

Really? Do I really have to answer this?

"I'm doing well, Doctor."

As he's talking to me, I'm told to lay over on my side as the nurse puts this plastic cylinder in my mouth that helps keep it open for the tube to easily inch in. I felt like a roasted pig on Thanksgiving with a big apple in its mouth. Helpless and motionless.

"Alrighty there Kera, we're gonna go ahead and give you the meds now, you'll be asleep in no time."

Yeah right, this stuff doesnt really work. Fight the sleep Kèra, fight it....

Next thing I know I'm awaken with my mom by my side and a nurse trying to talk to me. At this point I feel extremely drunk.

What the hell is going on right now?

"Did you dream?" My mom is so funny.

"Yea, I dreampt of a big house. The one from Monster House."

I'm handed a juice box of fruit punch, and biscotti crackers. But I still keep going in and out.

This stuff tastes really good. And here I thought I was gonna get saltines.

I'm still trying to fully awake myself. 20 minutes later, or so it seems, I'm getting out of bed and waiting to hear from the Doctor. He begins to tell me its nothing too serious...

"You have irritation in your stomach, you need to watch what you eat, eat 5 small meals a day, yada, yada."

Great, as long as its not an ulcer.

To end the day, my mom took me out for lunch to Stir Crazy, and we enjoyed a lovely meal together. Afterwards, she even took me to Target to buy me Monster House along with a bottle of Tums. Perfect combo.

I think I will now enjoy my movie and some much needed relaxation.

Heat Index

Let me just say, the heat today is way above normal. Measurable temperature of 95 degrees fahrenheit and the measurable feel of 105 degrees. The Sahara desert is the only way I can really describe it. While out today taking pictures, I felt the heat exhaustion creeping up on me. An hour is all I could handle. Hopefully it will cool down enough to see the shuttle launch, if not, the television will have to do.

Nature Trail

FGCU has a nature trail, and today we decided to go and visit it. To be quite honest, its nothing special. We thought it would be much more developed then what it actually was. We attempted a photo shoot, and ended up with a few good pictures because the 95 degree weather was not suiting us very well. Kylie was very awesome to work with, as always. And I'm super happy she could stand the weather for just a few shots.

We may attempt another shoot once the sun goes down a little bit. But for now we will enjoy the comforts of the amazing air conditioning.

A Success Story

Last night at work I was showing off my new pup Beau with pictures I had in my phone. Everyone was asking me questions, "how'd you find him?", "whats he look like?", "what kind of dog is he?". Maya, a girl from my work just so happened to know someone who lost a pitbull mix. Small world, I know. She talked to the guy and sent him a picture I had, and sure enough it was his lost dog. He came by this morning to come and get him and although I was extremely sad, I'm also very happy that he is back with his owner. I've never seen Beau, or Ike I should say, so happy.

I hope everyone had a very fun and safe holiday! My holiday was spent relaxing on the beach all day, bbq-ing with good people, and enjoying the American Pride atmosphere. Side from the seaweed infested waters and sea lice, the beach was home to many washed up creatures yesterday, and to my amazement, were all still alive. Tommy, Wes, and I spent that 30 minutes saving all the ones we could by putting them back into the ocean while meeting and naming them before we said our goodbyes.

There were also tons of sand dollars that were alive. I've never been able to see one alive and it is quite different. Their 'fur' really threw me off.

After our adventures and life rescues, we roasted some marshmallows while patiently waiting for the fire works to begin.

Today was an adventure, but what day isn't? Me and Kylie started our day by venturing out on roads less traveled. We came across a paradise fit for a princess. The landscape was magical with a hint of mystery which welcomed are footsteps with warm breezes and sunshine. There was even a hog to enjoy the comforts of such a day. And whats better than hog snorts as a background melody? Every fairytale needs an evil foe.

Being out of school, finally, gives me the chance to take as many pictures as possible and I love it. Today me and Cydne went downtown by the water and explored a little with Cameron. It was super hot with a heat index of 108 degrees but was well worth the trip. Sunny days, the ocean, and good friends are what put a smile on my face everyday, and with summer here, many memories are starting to be made.

Summer Flowers and Sunsets

Everywhere I go, these yellow summer flowers are popping up. I'm in love with them. It kind of reminds me of guerrilla gardening. For those of you who don't know what that is, its pretty much planting flowers or trees in places that are in need of a little sprucing up (ex. cities, places with too many roads, plain jane towns). Its little things like colorful flowers that put a smile on my face every day. And I hope when you see them, they do the same to you.

Adventures with Tommy

Today Tommy and I set out for something to do. For awhile we drove around aimlessly looking for cameras stores. (We found another Ritz North on 41, and realized that one was closed as well. Its scary to actually visualize what the economy is doing to us). After giving up, we went out to lunch and set out for an adventure. We drove past this preserve, and to our amazement was free, pretty big, and full of nature and wild life. We waited out the rain for a little while before our hike in bug infested acres (FYI: don't ever venture out after a humid rain, this is a bugs feast). On our trail we came across tortoises, pretty wild flowers, and wide paths which seemed to go on for days.

It was a relaxing little trail (we took the shortest one, the thunder was a little foreshadowing). Tomorrow we plan to set out again, maybe for a canoe ride.

Although this rain is much needed here, its almost preventing me from getting my daily photographs in, almost.

Though days lately seem to be drowned with dark clouds and gloomy weather, this rain has inspired new and creative ideas within me when it comes to comfort foods. I decided to try out this new recipe, which to my amazement was delicious. I took a green bell pepper, stuffed it with seasoned ground beef and onions, then topped it with fresh tomato, ricotta cheese, and four cheese marinara sauce. Yum.

A couple days ago I posted pictures of my favorite couple which featured stormy skies and crystal blue waters. I wanted to show you what kind of a monster that storm developed into when we were finished with the photo shoot. We were so occupied with pictures that we hardly had time to notice what was going on behind us until I saw the rolling in of extremely dark clouds through my viewfinder.

We actually had to run. I was really becoming scared because not only was I afraid of getting struck by lightning, but I was afraid for my camera! Good thing we have luck on our side though, we made it under cover right before the downfall began. I haven't seen clouds like this in what seems like forever. I'm hoping that our drought won't last for much longer, and the summer rains will help to alleviate Mother Nature's unquenchable situation.

Reading my daily news stories for the day, I came across something extremely beneficial. Music, in all forms, whether it be playing your favorite instrument, humming your favorite tune, or blasting your speakers in your car, music has been proven to reduce stress and release chemicals which prove to protect the heart. Studies show that listening to a new hip song that you like can open up blood vessels and pump blood easily throughout the body, which in the end may in fact prevent aging. Although this seems flawless, they also found that listening to the same song over and over again does not have the same effect. Studies have also shown that listening to a type of music you dislike, will actually counteract the lively and beneficial effects of a song you enjoy, and in the end causing you to be stressed.

So the next time you find yourself conflicted in road rage, or your having an over all stressful day, find a favorite tune and dance around. Find your health in music.

Bruschetta Burgers

Last night after getting back from the long drive, we stopped at our friend Evan's place for a little dinner. He happened to pick up this recipe book called "Building Better Burgers", and it has all of these award winning recipes for 'better burgers'. The one last night that we made was the Bruschetta Burger, and to my surprise was not hard to make at all. We followed a very simply recipe for Bruschetta, mixed the ground beef with spices, onions, and Gorgonzola cheese, topped it off with ham, and placed it in the middle of toasted french bread. It was a mouth watering experience to say the least, and even more enjoyable when you know its fresh. If you are interested in recipes like this one, or just love burgers, I suggest picking up this book!

Lemonhead

Summer time brings about cravings of the sun, the beach, and specialty drinks like lemonade. I've come across a way to make fresh, single serving lemonade that anyone can enjoy, and I'd like to share it with all of you!

Start with one whole lemon and cut it into eighths.

Next, take all the pieces of the lemon, toss them into a glass, and begin to muddle. (If you don't have a muddle, a big spoon works just as well).

After muddling all the lemon juice out, add about 3 tablespoons of sugar (add more or less depending on how sweet or tart you prefer it), and also add ice and water to the very top of the glass.

Lastly, poor your mixture into a shaker, and shake vigorously. (This enables it to become cold as well as helping the sugar to dissolve).

Now Serve!

My senior year of high school I did a project which entailed a fashion show to raise money for those suffering from leukemia. It was a hard process but ended up a success with a raising of over $1200. The fashions were donated by fashion designer Janelle who is the creator of her line Orangia. I completely fell head over heels in love with her clothing. She ended up creating a dress, and named it after me. I can't begin to tell you the excitement I was feeling at that very moment, but lets just say I could have been close to peeing my pants. A couple years have gone by and I received a text message from her today saying "The Kera dress in hot pink, your prom dress, was worn by Bridgett Marquadt playboy bunny on travel channel." I couldn't believe it! In one way or another she knows my name, and thats amazing.

To All Photography Lovers

If you are a researcher of the internet, you know you can find a great deal of cool things you can do with digital photography. Long exposure is one of my favorite things to do. But two of my favorite types of pictures lately are the Infrared and Bokeh. Infrared is a photo that uses a filter (homemade or bought) which allows all infrared light in, and blocks all or most of the visible light spectrum. By doing this you end up with a picture with deep reds and blacks. Green-leafed trees turn into white leaves, leaving the effect of what looks like snow to me.

Bokeh is referred in photography as the blur in your image when using a shallow depth of field. Blur in any image can create curiosity and interest, so why not turn that blur into something awesome? There are homemade techniques which you can use to make your own lens cover to create such blur with shapes including keyholes and hearts including different colors.

Black ready-to-wear in Spring?

Recent Spring ready-to-wear show by Stefano Pilati is showing less color, and more black. He tells Vogue that "he must reflect the times" when referring to our economic stand point. But his clothing is not just a classic walking down the runway. He shows classic suits with a twist using leather bustiers matched with pinstripes. Buying clothes are an investment. When in a recession, classics are safe, but the way he does it, you can still be a fashion statement.

Ohio is for Lovers

Cincinnati, Ohio

My spring break was amazing. I couldn't have asked for anything more. I took the whole week off of work, relaxed, and saw a lot of family. My grandpa was very excited to be able to show me Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up there, and it was great to see everything and hear stories. Although waking up super early doesn't quite suit me. Going Green?

If you are one of the many who are starting to go green, there is now no need to sacrifice your clothing. Designers such as Oscar De La Renta and Proenza Schouler are creating couture designs with fibers such as bamboo, corn, and organic cotton. You may ask yourself, whats the difference between regular cotton and oragnic cotton? The difference is that regular cotton uses many chemicals to create one piece of fabric, and the chemicals can become very damaging to the environment.

Designer John Patrick has taken the lead with his new line Oragnic. His inspiration: The Depression. Simple, but classy clothing. His Spring 2009 ready-to-wear line not only makes a bold statement of great fashion, but a statement of that to the environment. John Patrick has already been an inpriation to many deisgners, and others are now looking to make the move into earth-wise decisions.

Jail Bait

This semester I am taking a sociology class, and one of the requirements was to go tour the new downtown jail. Let me tell you, it was super scary. We went on Friday morning, and I hitched a ride with Devon. We turned down the wrong way at first and saw inmates inside the gates working, and it freaked me out because they would just STARE at you. They said only about 1% of Lee county's people are in jail, and it is on the downfall. But the ones that are in there, are really intimidating. I wish the pictures would have came out a little better, but lets just say I was a little nervous!

Strawberry Surprise

Yes, its been awhile since I have posted. My week has been nothing but hectic with two exams coming up. But, Tommy being the awesome person he is, made me a surprise. I guess he was cooking it from the beginning of the night, and wouldn't let me see until we were ready for dessert. I wasn't even aloud in the kitchen. When we were done with dinner, I opened the fridge to find chocolate covered fresh strawberries! This goes down in history as one of the sweetest things he has ever done for me.

Friends and Photo Shoots

Photo shoots with friends can sometimes be difficult knowing that they have to perform in front of you, and you have to be the director. Its nerve wrecking at first, but when we all start having fun with it, that's when the best pictures come out. A good friend helps you. I think for a photographer, your friend always better be willing to take a picture when the moment calls for it.

Today I went on a shoot with two of my really good friends. They wanted to help me with my 365, and that makes it even better! Risking getting into 50 degree sea water just for a picture, or even figuring out they are afraid of heights and they still climb that tree, or their arm doesn't really go that way, but they'll figure it out; that is a true friend! I worked a lot today on lighting and shadows. I couldn't pick just one for my 365 for today. So I picked a few. Enjoy!
